The Stoptober campaign is a government initiative to reduce smoking in the UK and was launched in 2012 to motivate the UK’s 10 million smokers to stop smoking for 28 days. Current research shows that people who stop smoking during this time are 5 times more likely to remain smoke-free. The campaign aims to highlight that quitting is easier with the right support.
Elizabeth West Service Manager said: “Stoptober is the perfect time to motivate people to quit smoking. As smoking remains one of the leading causes of premature death in Oxfordshire and the UK, providing free support to smokers can help to reduce the risk of people developing smoking-related illnesses.”
She added, “We are very excited about our mobile stop smoking clinic as this helps us to take support into the heart of the community and make the service accessible to all, particularly for smokers in hard to reach areas.”
Oxfordshires Director of Public Health Oxfordshire Ansaf Azhar, welcomes new and innovative ways for smokers to quit. “We all know how harmful smoking is to your health but now we have Bella, a free app which can help with motivation, alongside telephone advice and support for more tailored advice. Join the thousands of people that are also quitting in Stoptober. We know it’s not easy to stop smoking and sometimes it can take more than one go. Get your free help with Smoke-Free Life Oxfordshire and start your annual quit attempt today.”
Now in its seventh year, Stoptober has proven to be a successful national campaign in motivating people to quit as it creates a sense of solidarity during a difficult period. This is the perfect opportunity for anyone wanting to quit to take up support available to them.
